About the author: Abbot Barnabas has been a member of St. Benedict’s Abbeysince 1958. He joined the monastery with his twin brother, already having a brother and an uncle in the Abbey.

He was born October 16, 1937, in Atwood, Kansas. He attended Maur Hill Prep School in Atchison, and then St. Benedict’s College. He received a bachelor’s degree in History from the College, then entered the Abbey’s school of theology. He was ordained in 1964.

From 1966 to 1990, Abbot Barnabas was a teacher and administrator at Maur Hill Prep School. He earned a master’s degree in Educational Administration from Emporia State University and accumulated hours of graduate work in United States history at the University of Kansas.

Abbot Barnabas was elected abbot of St. Benedict’s Abbey in May of 1994, after serving three years as associate pastor of Holy Spirit Parish in Overland Park, Kansas. He assisted Archbishop Naumann with parish Confirmations from 1996-2012.  This book was published to celebrate Abbot Barnabas retirement from the office of Abbot in December of 2012.

Photography is a hobby he developed over the past twenty years. His photographs have been published as cards, calendars and featured with poetry. He provides a photo and text forCelebration, an ecumenical worship magazine published in Kansas City, for eight monthly publications each year.
