A native of Des Moines, Iowa, Father Denis Meade, OSB, graduated from Maur Hill Prep School and St. Benedict’s College. He entered St. Benedict’s Abbey in 1949 and professed vows July 11, 1950. After completing theology studies at the Benedictine international college of Sant’Anselmo in Rome, Italy, he was ordained on June 28, 1955.  He went on to complete canon law studies at the Lateran University, Rome, and returned to Atchison to teach in the Abbey’s internal theology school until its closing and in St. Benedict’s College and Benedictine College from 1961 until 2001.

He has served at various times as novice master, director of the postulants, and director of the junior professed members of the Abbey. Father Denis also served in the Abbey’s Brazilian foundation, St. Joseph’s Priory, Mineiros, Goiás, for seven years.

Father Denis has taken a special interest in the Abbey’s 157-year history, using his knowledge to aid in the formation of young monks. This book is dependent upon the centennial history of the Abbey, Kansas Monks, authored by Father Peter Beckman, OSB, in 1957.  All that follows that time is gleaned from the collective memory of community members and archival records.
