The Year of Mercy

Pope Francis has announced that 2016 will be the Year of Mercy.  St. Benedict’s Abbey will serve as one of the pilgrimage sites in the Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas with a Holy Door to be opened on December 13, 2015, to serve as a passage of mercy throughout the year.  Confessions will be offered daily before the 5:15 p.m. Weekday Mass, 11:30 a.m. Saturday Mass, and 10:00 a.m. Sunday Mass.  We ask that you join the Monks of St. Benedict's Abbey and the students of Benedictine College by making a pledge for the Year of Mercy (download a pledge card here, you can submit your pledge to be added to the basket with the form below).  Please join us throughout the year or at the for any of the events listed below.  If you have any questions please contact us.

Jubilee Year of Mercy Indulgence

Outside of the Four Major Basilicas in Rome, Pope Francis desires that all the Faithful have the opportunity to receive the Jubilee Indulgence during the occasion of the Year of Mercy.  This Indulgence may be received in the following ways, as designated by Pope Francis:

Designated Pilgrimage Sites with Jubilee Holy Doors

  • The Four Major Basilicas in Rome – St. Peter’s Basilica, St. Paul’s Outside the Walls, St. Mary Major, and St. John Lateran
  • Designated Churches and Shrines in each Diocese as sites of pilgrimage – St. Benedict’s Abbey has been designated as a Jubilee pilgrimage site by Archbishop Naumann

Requirements for Receiving the Jubilee Indulgence

For the Faithful in General

  • Make a pilgrimage to a designated Jubilee Pilgrimage Church or Shrine with a Holy Door
  • Receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation within several days before or after Pilgrimage
  • Participate in the Celebration of the Holy Eucharist within several days before or after Pilgrimage
  • Make a Profession of Faith
  • Pray for the Intentions of our Holy Father, Pope Francis

For the Sick, Elderly and Homebound

  • Live with faith and joyful hope their trials
  • Receive the Sacraments of the Holy Eucharist and Reconciliation as they are available
  • Make a Profession of Faith
  • Pray for the Intentions of our Holy Father, Pope Francis

For the Incarcerated

  • The threshold of their cell is to be a Holy Door
  • Visit the Chapel at their place of incarceration
  • Receive the Sacraments of the Holy Eucharist and Reconciliation as they are available
  • Make a Profession of Faith
  • Pray for the Intentions of our Holy Father, Pope Francis

For the Deceased

  • All the prescribed requirements, in addition to remembering them in prayer at the celebration of the Holy Eucharist

  • Sunday, December 6, 2015    Commitment Cards for the Jubilee Year of Mercy to be completed by the Monks and the Students and kept at the ambo throughout the Year of Mercy.
  • Tuesday, December 8, 2015    Opening of the Jubilee Year of Mercy with the Abbey 5:15 p.m. Mass; the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception.
  • Sunday, December 13, 2015    Opening of the Jubilee Holy Door at the Abbey-Student 10:00 a.m. Mass.  
  • Friday, March 4, 2016 – Saturday, March 5, 2016   Laetare Sunday, 24 Hours for the Lord:  A Vigil with Adoration, Benediction and Reconciliation.  Begins with the conclusion of 5:15 p.m. Abbey Mass on Friday, until 5:35 p.m. Vespers on Saturday.  Confessions will be offered at designated times.
  • Saturday, April 2, 2016 – Sunday, April 3, 2016   Divine Mercy Sunday, 24 Hours for the Lord:  A Vigil with Adoration, Benediction and Reconciliation.  Begins with the conclusion of 11:30 a.m. Abbey Mass on Saturday, until 10:00 a.m. Abbey-Student Mass on Sunday.  Confessions will be offered throughout the entirety of the Vigil.
  • Wednesday, November 2, 2016    Annual Visit to Abbey Cemetery:  Procession of Luminaries to Cemetery after Compline.
  • Sunday, November 13, 2016    Closing of the Jubilee Holy Door at St. Benedict’s Abbey and Conclusion of the Year of Mercy.
