Mary of Nazareth is only a woman. She was born of a real mother and a real father who conceived her in just the same way as all of us were conceived. She is no different than us. She is only a woman; that is, with one very particular exception. When the Eternal God, existing in a communion of persons – Father, Son and Holy Spirit – chose to save the human race from the hopeless and damnable predicament we got ourselves into he decided to become one of us. When the fullness of time had come he sent the Eternal Son into our world, and he chose Mary of Nazareth to be his mother. Why?

Cutting Out the Noise

I am coming up on three years now without listening to the radio in the car. However, last week, I was driving up to Des Moines for the funeral of Fr. Simon’s grandmother, and as I was crossing the Missouri River Bridge leaving town, I thought to myself, “Maybe I’ll just listen to a few Christmas songs on my drive up.”

I actually was debating with myself whether I should or not. I turned the radio on, and then immediately turned it back off – the noise was shocking; I drove a few more miles, having just turned north toward St. Joseph on 59 Highway, battling with my conscience.
